Earlier this year, Hertz announced that it would be using an AI-powered damage scanning system to check rental cars for damage after they were returned. But instead of streamlining the process and reducing costs, the system has been plagued by problems.

The issue began when customers started complaining that Hertz was charging them hundreds of dollars for minor cosmetic scuffs that wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow from a human employee. In some cases, the AI scanner flagged phantom damage – even when none was visible at all.

One user on the r/HertzRentals subreddit shared their own disastrous experience with UVeye. After renting a car from Hertz for a week, they were alerted that the AI scanner had flagged some apparent damage on the vehicle. But when they checked the car, there was nothing visible.

The user tried to speak to employees and managers at the Hertz counter, but none could help – all of them pointed fingers at the ‘AI scanner.’ They were told to contact customer support, but even that proved futile after representatives claimed they “can’t do anything.”

“It’s an unchallengeable, automated accusation,” the user wrote. “Did the AI scanner misinterpret water reflections or dirt on the black car as damage? There’s no way to even present that possibility, no path to defend yourself.” The user ultimately decided to give up on Hertz and never use their services again.

Hertz’ UVeye scanners are currently only deployed at airport locations. But other rental companies are investing in similar AI software – with worrying results. Our sister publication The Drive recently reported that Sixt, a Germany-based car rental company, is using an AI system called Car Gate to detect damage. Disgruntled customers described being fined hundreds of dollars over purported damage detected by the agency’s AI.

When they looked closer at the photos used as evidence, however, it became clear that something was fishy. The images showed damage that occurred before their rentals – meaning they shouldn’t have been responsible for the damage at all. In each case, the charges were eventually dropped after ample complaints.

The situation raises important questions about accountability and customer service in the rental car industry. As more companies invest in AI-powered damage scanning systems, it’s essential to ensure that these technologies are transparent, accurate, and fair – rather than perpetuating chaos and confusion for customers.

Hertz has yet to comment on the issue, but other rental providers would do well to take note of the problems plaguing their industry. The use of AI in damage detection may be seen as a cost-effective solution, but it’s clear that more work is needed to prevent similar disasters from happening again.
